Embrace Japan’s Winter Yuzu Bath Tradition—But Don’t Make This Mistake!
Winter in Japan brings a unique tradition that many look forward to: the yuzu bath. Floating fresh yuzu in a hot bath, this custom fills the air with a refreshing citrus aroma that’s believed to help ward off colds and ease winter’s chill. However, I learned firsthand that this simple pleasure has a surprising “don’t” attached.
When preparing a yuzu bath, most people simply place the whole yuzu in the water and let the natural aroma infuse the air. But, hoping to boost the scent, I once decided to cut the yuzu in half and squeeze the juice directly into the bath. Do not try this at home! The citrus juice may enhance the smell, but it comes with a hidden sting. If you have even the tiniest cut or scratch, you’ll feel an intense, unexpected burn. Worse yet, after soaking, I experienced skin irritation and had to take a quick shower to wash off the residual yuzu juice.
So, while a yuzu bath is a cozy winter experience that’s well worth trying, stick with tradition. Place the whole yuzu in the bath, relax, and enjoy the gentle aroma as it was meant to be enjoyed. Your skin will thank you!
